  1. Steve Cooper Steve Cooper says:

Saigon, 1970: the Americans are looking to switch out S Vietnamese leadership again, but general Nhu won't play ball. He's broken off discussions with the CIA to become VP, and prince Malko, SAS, has arrived to get Nhu back on board. After smoking opium with the general and making love to his beautiful wife, Malko accomplishes his task, but he also learns that the CIA's choice for president, the sadistic eunuch chief of police, Thuc, is most likely a Viet Cong spy. Even after surviving a torture session and 2 attempts on his life, Malko's suspicions are not believed by the local CIA boss, Zansky, who has personally vouched for Thuc and risks losing face. Malko goes over his head, takes a calculated risk, and ends up prevailing.

De Villiers seems especially critical of CIA arrogance and cynicism in this 20th SAS book. Probably because the subject is Vietnam in 1970, and he was drawing from France's long experience in the region. The torture is more graphic than the sex here, but there's a familiarity to the shameless SAS airlines plugs that feels like comin' home :)
