Re No Guarantees This is one of Robyn Donald's milder H's He is extremely intense but since he has been in love with the widowed 22 yr old h for yonks he is focused on getting a in with her to lurve her up madly and make her his own than being the domineering Alpha controller hating his passion for the h and punishing her for it The h in this one is freuently complained about among HP venturer's who have no patience for this book in fact this may be RD's most unpopular h That is understandable this one is really subtle and filled with an intense under the placid surface broodiness that is a very sober look at grief guilt and the boundaries of loyalty While RD pays some homage to Daphne Clair's Dark Rememberance in the book's trope this h is really experiencing her own coming of age over the course of this one It isn't a fun happy time for her and the angst in this is long and finely drawn so this one could be perceived as rather depressingThe story starts with the h having to go to a nearby farm sale with her nearest neighbor the H instead of the guy she was going to get a ride with and she isn't too pleased about the substitution Unfortunately inheriting the under capitalized farm from an obnoxious uncle then being married at 18 to the boy next door while in the midst of grieving for her recently deceased mother and having to give up her legal secretary job to run the failing milk farm has left her in a very precarious financial situation The h actually runs the farm and works in the nearby gardens as a day job to just scrape by She needs a new electric fence to keep her milk cows contained and she can't afford a new one so she hoping to buy an used one at the farm sale for much less expense Boundary maintenance between her land and the H's land is very important because the H runs different herd types than she does and there was a very bad history between the H and her dead uncle when animals strayed across the lines The h's dead husband continued the feud with the H and animals have been killed over property boundary disputes The h did not participate in any of the arguments or shoot anybody's animals but the H did shoot a bull when it strayed on his side one too many times and the h's dead husband went into major angry meltdown and hated the H until his death from a tractor rolling on him because he did not put a safety cage on it There were a few other reasons behind the dead husband's hate but the h herself is not aware of them until the end of the book Lest anyone think this H is mean for shooting the bull we soon find out he shot it cause it was uncontrollable and came close to seriously hurting the h multiple times until the H did something about it cause her husband wouldn'tHowever when the h called the H to help after the tractor accident he rushed over to help her and the local neighbors all stopped by to keep her farm running in the aftermath The h was grateful for the help but she was also wary of the H's assistance because he had taken himself off to other lands for over a year and he left fairly angry with her husband The H immediately offered to buy the farm when the husband died but the h can't sell to him Her uncle left it a condition of his will that if the h sells the property to the H she will forfeit any profits off the sale it will all be given to charity In essence the dead uncle has pretty much tied her permanently to the land The whole farm is surrounded by the H's land and no one else will buy it It used to be part of the original land grant for the H's spread but it got sold off after it was given to someone as a gift and the family has never made any secret of wanting it back The h can't afford to lose the profits if she sells her husband was a poverty stricken city boy who wanted to be a farmer The h found out about her inheritance right after her mum died and the neighbor boy pushed her hard for marriage They had been seeing each other but the h was only in her teens and did not get out much because she had school and later a job and also had to care for her invalid ill mother The h's father died when she was a baby and her mum had a big tether on her so she had a pretty restricted life and the neighbor boy was probably the only man she really knew The neighbor boy saw a chance to have his cake and eat it too cause the h is pretty good looking When the h found herself lost in grief and loneliness after her mum's death the neighbor boy was there to comfort her and she thought she was in love she really did not know any better Sadly the wanna be farm boy did not listen to the local farming advice and went for a milk farm setup taking out a huge loan to pay for the euipment The area isn't good for milk farming so profits are negligible and the dead hubby had to do contracting off the farm to make the payments The upshot of all this is that the h will be bankrupt if she can't keep the farm going and things keep breaking down In spite of all the hardship which the h is a bit resentful about because her husband just did what HE wanted and never included her in the decision making process the h actually likes the farm She loves the land and the animals she just wants to make it pay Gradually since her husband's death the h has been gaining some self confidence and faith in her own judgement however she still tends to avoid the H because he makes her very uncomfortable He isn't mean to her or anything she just has a prickling awareness of him and so the sale excursion ends up being a bit stilted on her side but we can tell the H is interested in her The h feels the interest too but she had met one of the H's discarded weeping lovers when she first came to the farm and she felt very sorry for the lady The h has no wish to be used as convenience too many men in the area already make nasty assumptions about lonely widows and the h isn't really sure that the H isn't using his charm to convince her to sell the farm to himPerversely the h also doesn't immediately tell the H about the conditions of the dead uncle's will She is rather reluctant to have no contact at all with the H and over the course of the story especially when her petite and flirtily sophisticated cousin moves in with her after a bad love affair gone wrong the h comes to realize that she is actually seething with uncontrollable attraction for the H This hidden and then gradually acknowledged passion is what drives the story because this h is actually a very loyal person She comes to realize that she married her husband for all the wrong reasons and the guilt becomes crushing as she realizes that the reason her dead husband and the H were fighting was because of her The H wanted her badly but the husband was just as possessive The h knew her marriage was not the best but she was raised to honor her vows and so she completely buried any feelings towards the H Her dead husband became controlling and because the h felt huge guilt over not being able to love the man she pledged her troth to the h did her best to do what he wantedAfter a year of grieving tho mainly for the sad loss of a man's life at such a young age the h is getting stronger in herself and when the cousin starts a mild flirtation with the H the h figures out that she wants him for herself There is a lot of back and forth between the H and h as he keeps trying to sweep in and take care of the all the farm problems for her and she tries very hard to fix things herself Finally the h tells the H about the conditions of the will and the H takes off The h is having a mopy moment but eventually things come to a big bang when a rotten slime slurper wanna be rapist attacks the h She actually saves herself in a very dramatic fashion The man killed her dog which is really really sad in a long saga of sad things and then sneaks into her house in the middle of the night to hurt her The h hears the guy get in but she can't make it to where she keeps the shotgun so she waits until he tries to attack her in bed and she totally knocks him out with a carotid artery punch Then she ties him up by his thumbs and the H finally shows up The H is suitably all Angry Alpha Defending His Mate while he deals with the aftermath and the evil slime slurper tries to say the h was asking for it The H isn't buying that at all and he threatens the evil toad with the chilling statement that if the guy tries to take things further or damage the h's reputation the H will chase him all across the world and Hell won't be big enough for them both It was an awesome H moment I and the h were totally cheering him on The slime slurper gets flushed to the sewer and the H tells the h they can get married to spare the h's reputation damage The h isn't too keen on being married to spare her reputation and the H then tells her he is marrying her whether she likes it or not cause he has been in love with her since the first time he saw her He was actually going to try and wreck her marriage but his mum made him take a year off cause she said the h would never be with him if he tried it she is way too loyal and has too much character to be happy with a man who would encourage her to betray herself The h explains that she has been harboring a lot of guilt over not loving the guy she married as a wife should and the H puts that to rest by explaining that the dead guy tried to take a shortcut to his dreams instead of working for them and that dead guy was just as much to blame for manipulating the h's guilt The h also feels that she might have contributed to the dead husband's accident she is afraid he did not take proper tractor safety precautions out of depression that the h did not love him enough The H dismisses that as nonsense the h herself knew that the dead guy was arrogantly sure he was right to a fault and basically was too sure of himself to use proper safety euipment This finally helps the h shed the last of her guilt and the H tells her to keep the farm for their kids Then he sweeps her off her feet for the best attempt at baby making ever and since this is HPlandia we know that hit is a bulls eye shot for the lurved up wedding planning the cousin gets engaged too in lurved up bliss to the local vet and baby making in the moonlight with true love forever HEA I like this book a lot and I think it is one of RD's best The H is so obviously into the h and she is struggling so hard to figure out who she is and what she wants and how she wants to live that this book is an angstfest growth and maturation extravaganza The character development of the h as she redefines herself is very well drawn and RD shows off some big talent in showing the h's growth While there is definitely struggle and a lot of sadness and not a whole lot OTT roofie kissing H and h drama this book is really riveting for those who like the uieter kind of angsting that a nice balance of character interaction and introspection can bring to their HPlandia outings

It's a very sad story from certain aspects the hero has been is in love with the heroine and is sure that she loves him too although she doesn't realize it there's just one small glitch she's already marriedCamilla thinks she's really plain and is desperate to make ends meet after husband dies People especially her neighbor keeps offering to help her but she's afraid of letting him get the upper hand since her husband hated this neighbor for reasons she never understood and also because her uncle to whom her land originally belonged made a deed whereby she couldn't sell the land to uinnI love this story the way it progresses shows how scared the heroine truly is of opening herself to the hero and she does so without knowing how he feels in turn I love the hero cuz he truly cares for her and comes to her help even when she's being stubborn their kisses when they do come around to kissing mean so much cuz you realize the struggle the hero's gone through to be be near her

Scintillating If the day to day drudgery of an overworked farmer in New Zealand the heroine floats your boat I did a double take at the publishing year 1990 because it was so dry that it could have been mistaken for a book from the 1950sGrade C

The title really sums up the plight of anyone tying their fate to farming This seems an unusual theme for an HP but here it is The heroine is trapped on a piece of land that she inherited from her uncle She married at 18 to the boy next door who had always dreamed up being a farmer Now said boy is dead and at 22 she is stuck with debt and back breaking labor for the rest of her natural daysThere's angst and then there's dustbowl angst This is dustbowl angst To further the pain the heroine doesn't think she can ask for help because her husband and uncle both hated the hero the big landowner in the district and she feels disloyal to them if she even accepts a ride to a local sale The opening of the storyThe heroine has a lot of other hang ups and RD brings them to light as the story rolls on Luckily for the heroine the hero has been in love with her from first sight ironic her husband married her for the farm yet that is the motive the heroine ascribes to the hero If not for him this dustbowl angst would have ended in bankruptcy andhopefully a new life elsewhere This isn't a story for everyone but I enjoyed reading about a different side of NZ Especially when RD throws in fighting words like this as well as a New Zealand invention the pavlova an edifice of meringue and whipped cream decorated with lime green slices of kiwifruit I wonder what her Aussie readers thought of that little throwaway Other thoughtswarnings Hero is a nice guy The cousinvet romance was sweet A dog dies Heroine shows her self defense moves Justice is done for a wrong doer

I found this to be a bit too dry for my tastes with all the same fears and issues surfacing almost on every other page Though the heroine was physically strong emotionally she was a train wreck that allowed her deceased husband and deceased uncle to control her from the graveActually rather depressing

this was a pretty good one actually though heroine was pathetic she had so many inferiority complexes and to top it she led a pathetic life thank god karen came on the scene at least then camilla realised what she was missing her ex dave was a sorry excuse for a husband but she never came to dat realisation as well she was just plain DUMB uin saved the book for me he was so caring and helpful despite all her rejections of him it was obvious even to a blind man dat he was nuts for her

I read this a long time ago and its always been one of my favorites The hero is very unlike the usual cruel H of Robyn Donald This hero is very protective and caring over the heroineThe heroine is a young widow who can barely get by but constantly refuses help from the H who is her nearest neighbor We find out in the back story that she inherited the farm from a distant uncle Soon after her boyfriend proposes they get married and since she is directionless She accepts She soon realizes that her new husband was in love with owning a farm than with her but he isn't mean to her Her late uncle was apparently feuding with his neighbor H and her husband continues acting hostile when they meet the neighbor The heroine has no idea why the husband acts like this but it makes her wary of dealing with the neighbor H Anyway the H goes away and they dont have much contact with him until the heroine is widowedSince both her uncle and husband were hostile towards the hero she is wary about accepting help from him though she needs to One of her cousins comes to stay and starts making a play for the hero The hero insists on helping her out and even rescues her from a bad situation He gives her a dog for protectionIn the end he confesses that he fell in love with her at first sight when she arrived as a new bride He even had plans of taking her away from her husband but his mother convinced him that even if he had succeeded she would have resented him after So this is why the hero goes away Finally he is free to court her when she is a widow but she had been being stubborn The H also tells her that her husband had suspected the H of being in love with his wife which is why he was always hostile towards him A long hard fought HEA
