A world of unparalleled beauty filled with mystery thrills suspense and magic lots and lots of magic – all beautifully put together beautifully describedAnd this brings me to another super extra strong point of the story the writing itself Flowing charming uite mesmerizing I would say Steven Smith‘s art of storytelling will surely prove enthralling Original fresh natural and so so beautiful his talent of storytelling is right up there with big names of fantasyAs you can see I loved the first book of the saga then the second; perhaps I was influenced by the characters aside the charming Elowen and her travel companions I felt a stronger connection to the characters in the first book But it’s an entirely personal subjective view of it; I loved the world of the first book I will confess The environment constantly changes around Elowen she is constantly meeting new puzzling mysterious and at times traitorous creatures her uests and adventures keeping you on the edge of your seat pretty much from one end to anotherI cannot recommend these books strongly enough; I’m personally looking forward to reading the next book in the series as I can’t wait to see how Elowen will deal with the rest of her uest how she’ll deal with Lord Lucien and the tyrannical forces of Prester JohnSadly these beautiful books are only available on Lulu so no easy peasy widget for you guys Go get your free copy of The Map of the Known World now and we’ll talk about it at length The Ordeal of Fire is Steven Smith's second book in the Tree of Life trilogy Elowen and her companions continue with a variety of uests Elowen and Diggory had found respite with the Illuminati and both were being taught and trained by masters Elowen is chosen to by one of the Illuminati leaders to join with several other students for a special task to obtain the four elements or mysteries However the love of power causes one Illuminati leader to betray all others and puts Elowen in a tenuous situation She realizes her mistake in being guiled by soft words too late and watches as the Illuminati are literally destroyed from within and finally by the Redeemers Elowen Diggory and Larwita are forced to flee and suffer imprisonment beatings and Elowen is branded a witch by a church leader after failing the ordeal of fire and is to be executed But she escapes She befriends many along the way including an Orok that was with the Illuminati Arigh Nasan She learns of her mother's history and ultimately realizes that she doesn't have to follow the same path While Elowen searches for the first mystery and deals with Lord Lucien Prince Asbjorn is dealing with his own set of trials Black Francis and the others aboard the Husker Du have been betrayed and imprisoned by the Sea Beggars and only Prince Asbjorn and Valbrand escape During their travels they encounter Prince Jeimuzu of the Kojin and embark on their own uest to save the lives of the Jeimuzu's sister and ultimately the lives of Black Francis and the sailors of the Husker DuThe Ordeal of Fire is filled with intrigue treachery and fantasy It is these elements along with the interesting characters and kingdoms that make it a good read We're introduced to a variety of different creatures and kingdoms The kingdom of the Orok and the previous khan Arigh Nasan's father seems to resemble the khan's of ancient Asia The Kojin are fierce warriers with skills similar to the samurai of ancient Japan During all of their trials and tribulations Elowen and Asbjorn must face their inner demons as well as their external foes Will they succeed? Will the Illuminati in Omphalos be warned in time of Prester John and the Mother Church's treachery? Will Lord Lucien succeed in obtaining all four elements and be able to use these to push forward the agenda of the Mother Church? We'll have to wait for the final book in the trilogy The Last Days to find out I found the first book of this trilogy The Map of the Known World as a free ebook on Lulu a few years ago and read and enjoyed it back then To my surprise the author who found my review on it back then e mailed me to let me know that this second book had just been released and offered me a free ebook of it This book continues the story of the first about orphan girl Elowen and her fight against the oppression of the Mother ChurchOnce again I enjoyed this book and it was nice to be able to return to the world and the characters again It didn't have uite the same fairy tale surreality that the first book had which made me take some small issues I otherwise might have been able to set aside I wasn't as fond of the characters this time largely because they didn't seem to be growing in the way I would expect given what they go through and the foreshadowing was a little heavy handed making at least most of the plot twists predictable It still had a very different feel compared to most fantasy that I've read which really helped to draw me into the story Like with the first book the darkness of the story is a little oppressive but it does enhance the hopeless long shot feel of the characters' struggle against what seems to be an unstoppable enemyIn short this was what I really enjoyed about the first book a good escapist fantasy easy and fun to read and I look forward to the day the third book comes out
