Lynn – 9facts.co.uk Tirza marks a high point in Grunberg s still developing oeuvre Finally done with this after 3 goddamn years FREEDOOOOMSo the first maybe 380 pages of this book were a mix of boring and disgusting Loooots of mentioning of sex, and a lot of it a little quesionable eg Banging a classmate of your daughters in your shed at the daughters party Buuuut I gotta admit the last bit was surprising and quite good, like damn boi I didn t see that coming It kinda makes me want to reread parts to see the foreshadowing, cause it was there and I know it wassss.So th Finally done with this after 3 goddamn years FREEDOOOOMSo the first maybe 380 pages of this book were a mix of boring and disgusting Loooots of mentioning of sex, and a lot of it a little quesionable eg Banging a classmate of your daughters in your shed at the daughters party Buuuut I gotta admit the last bit was surprising and quite good, like damn boi I didn t see that coming It kinda makes me want to reread parts to see the foreshadowing, cause it was there and I know it wassss.So there ya go, that s TirzaAlso quite ironic that I finished this on 9 11 since that plays a biiiit of a role in the book This book, this book the whole book you read about an insane man who has or wants to have sex with young women age 16 and eventually even 9 it was so gross and there were a lot of unnecessary sex scenes I did kind of enjoy the book because it was interesting to see the story develop but then it had an open cliff hanger ending and I just wanted to kill myselfIt feels like I just read a pedofile porno or something, now I know I won t even get the conclusion from the author So I was going to This book, this book the whole book you read about an insane man who has or wants to have sex with young women age 16 and eventually even 9 it was so gross and there were a lot of unnecessary sex scenes I did kind of enjoy the book because it was interesting to see the story develop but then it had an open cliff hanger ending and I just wanted to kill myselfIt feels like I just read a pedofile porno or something, now I know I won t even get the conclusion from the author So I was going to give it 3 stars but now just 2, this book was just too fucked up, the author starts to scare me, I don t know how someone in their right mind could think of a story like this with so much detail It was kind of interesting though not the worst book I ve read in dutch literature but it still made me want to throw up 80% of the time DISCLAIMER I am the publisher of the book and thus spent approximately two years reading and editing and working on it So take my review with a grain of salt, or the understanding that I am deeply invested in this text and know it quite well Also, I would really appreciate it if you would purchase this book, since it would benefit Open Letter directly.The book J Franz might write if he could get out of the way of his pretensions. This was a surprise I had actually given up on Grunberg his nihilistic oeuvre collided head on with my perhaps naive existentialist attitude also literary stylistic he did not resonate with me But Tirza is different By that I mean the world that Grunberg shows us here is as drab and hopeless as in his other books, but nevertheless this is a tremendous read The way he draws main character J rgen Hofmeester is masterly from the beginning this nice little bourgeois man seems to have some This was a surprise I had actually given up on Grunberg his nihilistic oeuvre collided head on with my perhaps naive existentialist attitude also literary stylistic he did not resonate with me But Tirza is different By that I mean the world that Grunberg shows us here is as drab and hopeless as in his other books, but nevertheless this is a tremendous read The way he draws main character J rgen Hofmeester is masterly from the beginning this nice little bourgeois man seems to have some creepy traits, but in the end he turns out to be a real but pitiful monster The interaction with his wife, who after 3 years of absence suddenly returns to him, reminded me of the intensity of Who s afraid of Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee, just as delicious The final chapters in Namibia, on a trip with a 9 year old black girl, brought back Nabokov s Lolita , and the graduallyintense state of trance of Hofmeester seemed a nice reference to Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment by Dostoyevsky I know, Grunberg seems to measure himself with the Great Now I agree, there are some weaker points in the story, such as the pale figure of Tirza herself for obvious reasons or the metamorphosis of the wife from bitch to dedicated wife , and also the decisive turn in the plot is not entirely unexpected But I do think Grunberg really succeeded in delivering a truly great, grotesque book 3 stars

About the Author: Arnon Grunberg

Arnon Yasha Yves Arnon Grunberg is a Dutch writer Some of his books were written using the heteronym Marek van der Jagt.In 1989 Grunberg made his acting debut in Maria s Cunt de Kut van Maria a short film by Dutch enfant terrible filmmaker Cyrus Frisch.Grunberg made his literary debut in 1994 with the novel Blauwe maandagenBlue Mondays , which won the Dutch prize for the best debut novel that year In 2000, under the heteronym Marek van der Jagt, he won the best debut prize again for his novel De geschiedenis van mijn kaalheid The History of My Baldness.Grunberg publishes novels about once a year but also writes columns and essays in a wide variety of Dutch and international newspapers and magazines He does not restrict himself only to the written media, but also reads a story for the radio every week and for some time he was host of a cultural television program He also writes a blog for the literary Internet magazine Words Without Borders and his own site ArnonGrunberg.com.His novel Tirza won the Dutch Golden Owl Prize for Literature and the Libris Prize 1 His books have been translated into many languages, including English, German, Japanese and Georgian.From 2006 Grunberg wrote various journalistic reports, for example about working undercover in a Bavarian hotel and his visit to Guant namo Bay Also he visited the Dutch troops in Afghanistan and the US Army in Iraq In 2009 these reports were collected in the book Chambermaids and Soldiers.
