The Last Awakening Curse of the Phoenix #2 Joint Review I first became acuainted with Rachel Firasek with her first novel Piper's Fury and it was so good I was certainly on board for anything she writes Well I was all kinds of excited when I found out she was coming out with this three part novella series Curse of the Phoenix In book one we meet most of the key players that carry over to this book so I strongly recommend reading them in order Now in book 2 The Last Awakening we have Arabella Durand's storyArabella is a phoenix she is sent to save lives of the chosen which always ends in her death Ari has been repeating this reincarnation process for about 300 years thanks to Osiris the Egyptian god of the Underworld Today her mark is Greyson Meadows and ex Marine who fought in Afghanistan and is carrying an extensive amount of personal baggageElena Piper's Fury was also my first novel I read by Rachel Firasek which if you haven't read it add it to your shelves our blog decided to give her Phoenix series a go and the tables started turning We're all now a huge fan of her series and waiting very patiently while she musters up yet another great novelnovella'sSam I was so glad when Rachel contacted us to read ‘The Last Rising’ – after loving the first Phoenix book I knew that the second book would be a winner right from the start I was not disappointedRhonda Ari meets her mark and saves him from being shot by an elderly veteran that has gone postal and decides to start shooting everyone in the little store where Grey stopped to grab some beer for game day Ari immediately realizes upon her flashing out as her Phoenix that Grey isn't going to handle the events well and begs Osiris to send her back to help him Osiris agrees to let her go back but not without conditions Before Ari became a Phoenix she was a voodoo priestess and has some hefty baggage of her own Grey harbor’s some serious issues with failure due to events in Afghanistan and after being left the lone survivor of the shooting all his failures start to fester even Elena Rhonda went into details about what you can look forward to in this series But I just have to add a few thoughts I liked Last Rising BUT Last Awakening was spectacular The Hero and Heroine have a deep dark connection between their pasts to their present selves They understand and complete one another I love tortured characters that end with a wonderful HEA Grey and Ari made my heart melt They have an instant attraction that just clashes in an amazing way I believe Ari's French made Grey all types of happy I loved it I found myself smiling throughout most of the novelSam I really liked both hero and heroine; the two really shared a special bond The two had amazingly scorching hot chemistry and as Elena mentioned Ari’s French was just all types of erotic I loved the background story for Ari; I think that Rachel really did well in the depths that she went into it From the very start I have loved the concept of the Phoenix It’s not something I have read about is the past and it’s still great to read something new and refreshing from the same old Vampire story that gets thrown aroundRhonda Grey needs saving than just from the bullet that could have taken his life He needs saving from the self destructive path he's heading down I love a tortured hero but this time we have a heroine who is just as tortured and needs to be saved just as much as the hero I think Firasek pulls this off beautifully and the background of Ari definitely displays her creativity along with the base story behind the series The Hh have wonderful chemistry and I really loved watching them save each otherElena the plot was very dramatic and eventful which kept me reading it non stop I was connected throughout the novel with the plot of the story including the involvement of the characters The story was very intriguing and it fascinated me I had a little of both of the characters story when reading it The emotional conflicts between this couples was sweet tearful and all together heartfelt Their relationship becomes stronger and stronger as the book progresses In the end they overcame all the obstacles that were thrown their way and no one could stop them from being a partSam What I love most about both book one and two is that even though both are novellas Rachel has managed to make the story not seemed rushed Often you read a Novella and its crammed in and jumps from place to place Rachel Firasek has the talent to fit a full length novel into a novella sized packageRhonda I really enjoyed the first novella in this series but this one was fantastic fast paced but getting her story across without leaving unresolved issues Her characterization was spot on Ari is sweet and sassy yet strong and compassionate Grey is a little rough around the edges but kind hearted and at the same time he's sexy protective and possessive exactly what I like I liked that all the previous characters played a role in this story as wellSam I cannot wait to read into this series It’s original and pulls you in instantly I'm waiting with baited breath and crossed fingers that Rachel contacts us once again to review the next book in the trilogy And like ‘The Last Rising’ this book earns the big FIVE STARS from meElena Rachel Firasek hits all the right spots in a well written story She put a lot of thought and determination into this novel so therefore by me giving it a 5 Star rating it’s a definite HECK YES I will continue to read many wonderful novels by this author Rachel Firasek The Last Awakening setting them free When Ari becomes the target of her own magical blunder it’s not just her life in danger but now the one of the man she lovesFrom goodreadsMy Description This is the second book in the Curse of the Phoenix series and it is only 118 pages on PDF format It is an Adult Paranormal Romance It does have Adult Scenes in the bedroom so if you are looking for a YA read this is not it It only took me about 4 hrs to read it from cover to cover I had not read the first book The Last Rising so I uickly went and read the reviews on the first book before I started this oneThe Book starts out with Arabella Ari in a cab getting out in front of a small town grocery store She is being drawn to an unknown person that she must die for that she has to save Ari heads inside the store and finds an ex soldier named Greyson Meadows Grey and starts up a conversation Once she touches him Ari knows that he is the one She is captivated by the pain and loneliness she recognizes in his eyes It’s a pain she knows all too well because of what has happened in her pastThings become chaotic fast when an old war veteran comes inside the store with a gun The poor old man is wrapped up in a delusion brought on by post traumatic stress disorder PTSD He is lost in his memory of a war long gone and starts shooting everyone inside the store Grey is suffering from his own personal hell of PTSD from a different war and is devistated by his inability to save everyone and the fact that he is the lone survivor yet again Once Ari Returns to Osiris the Egyptian god of the Underworld She can’t forget Grey The guilt of how bad he has to be suffering is killing her inside She ends up black mailing Osiris into letting her go back to help Grey cope and help him understand that nothing that has happened is his fault The only downside is that Osiris sends her back not with her Phoenix powers but with her original voodoo priestess powers that she can’t control and are responsible for killing every single person in her village 300 years agoCan she save Grey from his self Will She Kill him and everyone else with her growing Powers Or will her own Guilt of her past be too much for her to bare to help anyoneMissie’s Thoughts When I began reading the first chapter I felt a little bit lost So I would advise reading the first book in the series I didn’t know what a Phoenix was or how Arabella Ari became a Phoenix what her powers exactly were All that it kept saying was that she had to die for them she had to save them I had to reread a few paragraphs to finally get my mind around what was going onHowever after reading the first couple of chapters Rachel Firasek started reviling and of where the characters come from what they were and what they had been through It helped me understand and the book started making sense and the story really started to flow I loved how Ari and Grey connected with each other The way they could read each other through each other’s eyes Rachel kept the suspense going throughout the book so you keep guessing all the way til the end Will he die Will she die Now Whatlol This book is also an Adult Romance in the fact that it is a little on the erotic side There’s just enough steam to get your heart pumping without going over the top I really liked this book I believe if Rachel had given a little bit background at the beginning of the book for first time readers jumping into the series I would have enjoyed it a little I would definitely recommend this book Ari is trying to find the soul she is supposed to save Walking into a store she wonders around for a few minutes until she finally sees the one she was sent for Greyson and Ex Solider who has his own issues As he is talking to a friend of his and her two girls he notices Ari and how great she looks Out of no where Greyson’s old friend Harry also an Ex Solider comes into the store with a gun and things go wrong Ari saves Greysonbut at what costsRachel knows how to write a wonderful story with romance and some hot scenes Not too hotbut enough to make a girl smile I enjoyed seeing some of the characters from the first book in this series Ari is one of my favorite characters and enjoyed seeing what was going to happen to her and GreysonWith so many twists and turns you stay on your toes I wanted the book to keep going and can’t wait till the 3rd books comes out soon This is one author you need to keep your eyes on Rachel knows her stuff LOVE this series SO glad a friend turned me on to it I read the first two books today haven't gotten much else done lol Cannot wait for book 3 and Sadie's story Amazing books Rachel The Last Awakening is the second book in Rachael Firasek's Phoenix series and certainly a wonderful addition In The Last Awakening we have Arabella Ari who has been sent to save her Marks life Here Ari finds Greyson Meadows and ex solider who is a tortured soul carrying hurt and guilt like no other She finds him in a convenience store and this is where Ari will meet her death again Ari has been doing this for over 300 yearsloosing herself to the phonenix time and time again but after seeing Greysons eyes hurt and damaged soul she decides he needs her In her plight with Osiris she is sent back to Earth to save Greysons soul but this may just cost her her ownWow Rachel has woven her magic throughout this read two characters with a connection like no other Deep and dark yet intertwined both needing someone to heal the hurt and move on with life Both Ari and Greyson have Damaged souls inflicting guilt upon themselves than one could possibly carry The connection between Ari and Greyson was magnetic; at times you could feel your heart aching for them both and other moments I had the reader in frenzy just to get to the next page The love was scorching yet filled with something than just the loving it was all wonderfully portrayed with such depth and not just on the physical level They both needed each other to heal and Rachel has put forth the emotions well in this story The storyline is short but don’t let this deter you it’s not rushed very well paced and everything one could want in this story is present No gaps no rushed scenes it has all been well placed and delivered as if the book was over 500 pages long The depth and connection involved between the characters was well delivered and envisaged heartfelt moments where you could feel the characters pain and other moments I’m sure you will be grinning from ear to ear wink Hot love scenes that will scorch your eyelashes but also have you sheepishly grinning feeling kind of happy for the characters This will make sense when you read the story Other scenes you will be gripping at your reader and holding your breath I enjoyed the fact that Rachel has also brought forth characters from her first book I liked seeing them surface and provide depth also into this story Friendships and past history bonds Ari and Ice Turner Mike and Greyson A wonderful selection of characters I’m sure you will enjoy I’m sure you will even see a different side to Osiris in this story I enjoyed his placement in this story; it gave us feeling to his character and depth It showed us that he did what he did for a reason and really because he cared You must read book one then this one to get this Rachel balances her stories well with eual amounts of romance storyline and twists and turns you won’t see coming I eagerly await book 3 in this series and recommend this book to all who love romance heartfelt moments a little action and smexy scenes And even maybe a happily ever after My thoughtsI'd considered the high standard of the first book in the series The Last Rising unable to be met by this seuel in terms of it's originality intensity and uick pace I was wrong The first book was captivating i rated it four stars but The Last Awakening was both captivating and utterly enthralling This book includes everything you expect and enjoy from a full length novel and in no way feels as though it's been crammed in We had the strong willed Ice serving her penance as a phoenix in The Last Rising but this time we have Arabella An eually likable and tough protagonist Ari is a French speaking former priestess voodoo practioner with a torturous past that ultimately led her to the life as a phoenix For over three hundred years Ari has spent her time dying to save another then being re born to do it over and over againFinding her latest mark to save in a store Ari comes face to face with an aggrieved ex soldier called Greyson She immediately identifies with anguish and torment in his eyes but even so after she performs her 'phoenix duty' and saves him during a shootout Ari realizes he's emotionally damaged further since he was unable to save those he loved at the scene Returning to Osiris the Egyptian God of the Underworld Arabella demands he send her back to Grey Relating to his misery she wants to help him heal and banish his undeserved guilt It's immediately evident she's a fierce and no nonense heroine as it's through blackmailing Osiris Ari gets her wish Though instead of being sent back with her phoenix powers Osiris gives her back the very thing that has caused her own emotional conflict throughout the years Her voodoo powers Powers of which she has absolutely no control over and may just cause the deaths of those she loves Neither the plot nor the characters alone carry the story they both compliment each other Though i have to admit the three dimensional characters are the driving force behind my high praises I just loved them The special bond between Grey and Ari is tangible right from the start and oh so sizzling The hero and heroine both possess their own personal demons and overwhelming guilt that they have to fight Yet they must learn to help one another to win the battles The two characters grow and change with their experiences and the love that blossoms is truly adorable swoon We also see the return of Turner Brodie and Ice from The Last Rising as Grey is Turner's friend and Ari Ice's It's a tricky matter to have a series with each book containing a new protagonist or two and keeping hold of the readers interest But i personally wouldn't have minded if they had been there or not even though i was sure i'd miss them in this seuel Regardless it was a nice touch The inclusion of Osiris on the other hand i feel was important to the story's progression I can't wait to read about him and hope he has book of his own in the series I haven't mentioned the suprise antagonist yet have i Well i'm not naming names because he or she ; is part of a twist that i'm sure will have your jaw dropping But i will say that this badass went against my expections of the direction of the novella and created an even solid plotSummaryThis is a tale of love redemption guilt and non stop entertainment All key points to the plot are tied up nicely yet leave room for the series to grow For me the key strengths of The Last Awakening are the well rounded and likeable characters the pace the author's ability when creating such riveting intensity and the sexual tension that is void of typical pnr cliches by the wayRefreshing I loved it This author's one to watchRecommended toPnr fans romance fans Greek mythology with a twist fans and novella phobes lol RatingDon't need to guess how many stars i'm giving this one For three hundred years Arabella’s life has been one meaningless death after another In a cruel twist of fate Osiris–god of the Underworld–gifts the phoenix her mortality and returns her voodoo magic If she fails to harness her wayward magic and save a man worthy of a second chance she’ll forfeit her power and her soul–foreverEx soldier Greyson Meadows desperately wants to be freed from the nightmares and guilt that haunt him after the tragedy that brought him and Ari together Confronted by the waif of a woman who forces him to face his worst fears he resists fighting the need to keep his personal demons hidden instead of setting them freeWhen Ari becomes the target of her own magical blunder it’s not just her life in danger but now the one of the man she loves Arabella and Greyson have a wicked hot love story and wildly inventive universe in which to play in Ms Firasek is a go to about who put so much effort and love into her books that you can't help but feel lucky you found her She will take excellent care of your heart while you enjoy her amazing ride Treat yourself to her whole collection The Last Awakening was a very different story than The Last Rising but I enjoyed them eually I actually think that I was caught by surprise as to how different these two stories are but why wouldn't they be I asked myself afterward Every man and woman has their own uniue story and the world would be pretty boring if we were all the sameAs the book opens Arabella is being drawn to the next person that will need her She soon discovers that it is a handsome man in a grocery store in the middle of nowhere An old veteran goes crazy and shots the place up The handsome man made and impression on Arabella and she begs Osiris to send her back to him Arabella is back on earth after spending three hundred years serving the god of the underworld Osiris He has warned her that she is on her own and her voodoo magic has been returned however her phoenix has been taken in its place Greyson is an ex solider and has horrible issues those issues continue after the grocery store is shot up and one of his best friend's wife and two young children die of their injuries yet Greyson survives Not on that but the beautiful woman he met in the store that day disappeared into flames and has been no where to find The guilt is horrible and he really does not know what to do with himselfGreyson heads to his local hangout only to find her there he cannot figure out how she is out and about let alone working He is drawn to her but just can't allow himself to get involved it is just too much Arabella has different thoughts and keeps pushing at him but her voodoo is getting out of control and she doesn't know what to do about it Will the two be able to work things out or will disaster strike firstI really enjoy this story it has twists and turns all over the place many surprises that you never see coming Greyson is a huge basket of conflict one moment I totally get him and the next he leaves me confused as to his action and why he makes the decision he has But the man is smokin' and knows how to please Arabella She also has her own troubles she struggles with her voodoo and this brings a welcome surprise in the book and that is the return of my favorite character from book one We get a small peak into their lives along with some trouble that Arabella faces with her voodoo All in all this was a page turner that I sat and read in one sitting Rachel Firasek knows how to put together a novella that balances the romance and a real story something that I have found few and far between in the novellas I have read Typically they are all romance and sex or they are all plot with sneak peaks at the romance and sex but nothing lasting for memorial I hope that you will check out both of these novella They are on the top of my recommendations This was perfect to read right after The Last Rising as I had the storyline fresh in my mind This story centers around some supporting characters from book one Ari and Grey and it is so different from the first novella but just as wonderful You just see glimpses of them both in the first book and now you get their full story I love that Ice and Turner make appearances throughout this story You also get to see a different side to Osiris and learn about him and his choices I'm curious about him nowAri is a phoenix trying to redeem herself by saving the souls of others She crosses paths with Grey during one of her missions and just can't get him or his lost looking eyes out of her head I love how much she is drawn to Grey and wants nothing than to save him from than just death she wants to save him from himself Grey is a man who has seen much death and has yet to get over some heart wrenching feelings that he has been holding onto for too long Grey sounds like such a sexy man yet he seems so broken The relationship between Ari and Grey is filled with ups and downs and would test even the strongest of couples But they both know that Failure is not an option They need each other I loved that Ari speaks French here and there throughout the story as she is from New Orleans She also has magical powers like voodoo that intrigued me With this in mind there were a few twists and turns that I didn't see coming I think so far she is my favourite character of the seriesI am really looking forward to the next novella and I even have a guess for who the next one will be about but I'll keep that a secret so I don't spoil anything for anyone
